Diamond Clarity

Clarity refers to the clearness or purity of a diamond. Diamonds that are absolutely clear are relatively rare and therefore the most valuable. Many diamonds have inclusions, which are sometimes referred to as “nature’s fingerprints”, such as scratches, minerals or other tiny characteristics which are usually not visible to the unaided eye unless magnified. The higher the clarity of a diamond the higher is the value.

A very important aspect while considering clarity is the position, size and number of inclusions. A diamond certified as VS1 may contain a tiny inclusion positioned right on top of the diamond while a VS2 certified diamond may contain a larger inclusion, but placed at the bottom and not visible from the top.

There is in place a universally accepted gradation system which all international grading laboratories, traders and markets follow.

FL / IF – This stands for Flawless or Internally Flawless. These diamonds are expensive and rare and contain no inclusions whatsoever.

VVS1 / VVS2 – This stands for Very Very Slight Inclusions. Diamonds certified as VVS1 or VVS2 contain extremely tiny inclusions which are not visible to the naked eye and also difficult to see under 10X magnification

VS1 / VS2 - Very Slight Inclusions. Inclusions in this quality of diamonds cannot be seen to the unaided eye but can be seen through 10X magnification.
SI1 / SI2 – Slight Inclusions. In diamonds certified as SI1 or SI2 the inclusions can be seen through 10X magnification and some inclusions can be visible even to the unaided eye.

I1 / I2 / I3 - Imperfect diamonds contain inclusions that are obvious under 10x magnification and can easily been seen under the naked eye. These diamonds don't have as much sparkle to the naked eye.
